The Essential Engineer’ by Henry Petroski, is a must-read for any engineer, or anyone who is interested in this subject. This book is regarded as one of the best written books in this field, as it portrays so many different issues where engineering and science need to work together. If this is done, many problems can be resolved or diminished, and several issues can be tackled effectively. This includes the development of efficient techniques and methodologies, the search for renewable sources of energy, climate change and natural disasters, to name just a few.

It goes without saying that scientists try to find the root of these problems, and they also work to identify various issues. However, it often falls on the engineer to evaluate such problems and find ways or resolving them, or make the best use out of them. And this is just what this book is all about. It highlights the beauty and the practicality of the field of engineering from various perspectives.

Hands down the best advice I ever received was, 'The longest way begins with one step'. I have always been drawn to figuring out what makes things work and how they are put together. In high school I had the opportunity to take part in several science fair projects that allowed me to see first hand what engineering really was. It was great to take a question and systematically evaluate the validity of a solution.
